We've all been there. You have a few drinks with friends and feel relaxed and ready for a good night's sleep. But then, in the middle of the night, you suddenly wake up and can't fall back asleep. The reason? The alcohol has finally been metabolized by your body and turned into glucose, making you feel like you're on a sugar high.
This phenomenon has long been a mystery, but recent research by world-renowned sleep scientist Dr. Matthew Walker sheds new light on the subject. In his studies, Dr. Walker has found that alcohol disrupts the natural sleep cycle, causing you to wake up in the middle of the night and stay awake.
This may come as a surprise to many of us, who have long been told that alcohol can help us fall asleep. But as Dr. Walker explains, alcohol may initially help you fall asleep faster, but it also decreases the amount of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep you get, the stage of sleep when we have the most vivid dreams. This disruption of REM sleep leads to fragmented, less restful sleep, which can result in feelings of grogginess, decreased concentration, and irritability the next day.
So, what can we do to avoid the unpleasant effects of alcohol-induced insomnia? As you may expect, Dr. Walker suggests limiting alcohol consumption, especially before bedtime. Additionally, staying hydrated and avoiding caffeine in the evening can also help improve the quality of your sleep.
In my one-on-one mentorship program, we'll dive deeper into Dr. Walker's research on the link between alcohol and insomnia, and explore practical tips for getting a good night's sleep.
Additionally, we'll discuss Dr. Andrew Huberman's findings on the relationship between adenosine, caffeine, and natural sunlight as it relates to sleep, and the further findings of Dr. Walker's research on the link between sleep and Alzheimer disease.
Despite everything else going on in the world right now, its always nice to shift your perspective and remember we are living in times of incredible wonder and discovery as well.
